Romy, As you're planning to run a 6K load, you can run less current without the transfer curve suffering as much. So, another shot at some numbers.... rather than use a RC setup to drop the voltage, Hammond (not my favorite) make an open f...

Yes, thanks Charles and thanks for everyone who sent the direct amps on this subject.
The ClarityCaps, similar to the Canadian Solens, British Ansars Supersound, the French MKP, and a few others proposed, are all Metallized Polypropylene caps. I am ...

Gordon Rankin of Wavelength Audio did a series of one-stage DHTs with a step-up transformer input about ten years ago. I think they were called the Mercury series. By all accounts, they sounded good, but of course had limited gain, not much power and...

Gintaras, yes, the 10.5mA was a bit too little for gas
tube, 21mA. If you look at the stability of voltage regulation graph for these
tubes then you will see an ark with 15-20ma being atop.
I do not understand why you keep asking me R13
& R...

I stumbled upon this. And noticed the extra 6.8mH balun ahead of the diodes. Hmmm, I wonder if this can help snap that diode off? Seems very counterintuitive. Or maybe it is wired up not as a common mode choke? Need to t...

I use Sowter model 9550 for my treble horns. (Changing over to these was the biggest single improvement I've ever made). Brain is very good to deal with and will make anything to your specs. He has huge experiance with OPT design.Oneday I want to com...
Hi Romy,i want to use the 6E6P-DR (triode mode) as driver in my tube 45 amp.I use a D3A (triode mode) with Anode choke at 180V, 12mA. Grid 2 is connected via 50 Ohm resistor to anode. Grid 3 (pin 8) is connected to cathode.Th...

In my view the Ringing of chokes is a BS reason that was invented by manufacturers who do not want to spend money for input chokes. Any book has formulation to calculate the critical inductance and if you are meeting the conditions then it will be no...

Jarek, what you describe can happen if anything with voltage touches the chassis, or something might be arcing across a very narrow gap. I have seen part leads that went too far through PCBs, also carelessly fitted stand-off. Even the axis of a choke...

I've used both tube and solid-state rectification over the years and much is well documented for power supplies, i.e., old ARRL manuals, Tube manuals, etc.. In most cases small value filter caps were shown, as you really couldn't get much in la...

How about shunting the 1H choke with 180K or so and changing the 20k to 22k5.... that's a rough calc (should redo for standard values)... will keep the x/o point the same and eat up a decibel......
|
Hagtech, why not??? VR's are sensitive to parallel cap, as they have intrinsic esl (few mH). choke will increase the ac regulation.Of course it must have enough DCR (or R in series) to give the static voltage drop (giving e.g. some trace of line regu...

Quite likely, at least some of the time.I'll just stay tuned while you locate the L-pad ;>). It's been years, but I think the ones from my 'stats are choke-based.Nice to have options on a record-by-record, day-by-day basis, anyway, to keep t...

Thank you Romy, that was very informative and instructive!I don't completely agree that OP is absolutely irrelevant for linearity. It can happen that some regions, under given design constraints, will not give "a proposer harmonic structure of

Romy, I'm of course familar with your MF design and Jim's 6E5P curves is what I base my considerations on at this moment (along with the corresponding Spice model).Your DHT MF is quite self-balancing due to the large cathode resistor. WhatI have in m...

Why not tap the filter choke (the 1H ahead of the driver) ie use a 1H autoformer... given the gentle loading presented by what follows, it shouldn't mess up other stages, no?cv...
|
BTW, how stable 6E5P is? I'm asking as I was contemplating biasing the output by the voltage drop on 6E5P's plate choke (DCR is say around 1k),with only some minimal autobias on the output. The drawback is that any drift in the driverwill rebias the ...
You may wish to apply similar tactics to the power supply (low DCR inductors) if you want to be really surprised...
What do you mean, Chris?

...but it will take me N-years and I'm in EU :)I could make some preliminary steps this Easter, talk to my winders about transformers etc.I'm for sure missing the FW and out put cores (AMCC800A will not support 120H at 300mA, low DCR), but getting ma...

Agreed.... ditch the choke... you don't need any additional decoupling. One last model shows the following assuming a 350 volt supply and a 6K load.Useing a 1.21K cathode resistor, it works best to minimize distortion and balances the transfer charac...

Domidaw, I am not sure if I will be wrong if I say that this amp was first electrical device I build also. so I went over the same problem as you are going. trust me I made a number of ridiculous mistakes as well and so many times I call to peopl...

Romy, I have not been following this thread very much andI'm probably too stupid to understand, but how comes that your power supplies with choke input, tons of quality uF + smart bypassing still make the electricity a concern? If you don't listen to ...

FWIW I have found that best results are from dedicated transformers for each filiament. I would not even think of using a multiple secondary trans for DHT's.I use a split bobbin type only. The split bobbin gives very poof HF coupling in audio but is ...

Well, I also would like to have a spare ability to care current but 10A is 35 pounds monster and… it has just 100mH. I would prefer to have extra inductance then exacta current. The current wise is juts the thickness of the wire as I understand…I pre...

Yes, Jim, you put it very well. Still in case of the 6C33C it only possible to cool the glass and I made experiments blowing a strong flow to the glass and it did cool down the plates. The problem is that it is not a good idea to apply a strong flow ...
